EDC machine: the card machine

An EDC machine, for electronic data capture, is the card machine at a shop or restaurant counter: the terminal a customer taps, dips or swipes a card into, which also accepts UPI. Shopkeepers call it the card machine or swipe machine; banks and payment companies call it a PoS terminal. It takes payments and does nothing else.

The definition

What EDC stands for, and why nobody says it

EDC is electronic data capture, the banking term for reading a card electronically and sending the transaction to the bank for approval. The machine that does it has been on Indian counters for two decades, and almost nobody calls it an EDC machine. Shopkeepers say card machine, swipe machine or swiping machine. Payment companies say PoS terminal. Manuals say EDC. They are all the same grey or white box that a customer taps, dips or swipes a card into, and that now also shows or reads a UPI QR.

The slip it prints is the EDC bill: the amount, the masked card number, an approval code and the merchant name. It proves a payment happened. It is not an invoice. It does not list what was bought, it carries no GSTIN or HSN code, and it does not know what the shop has in stock. Those are the billing machine's job, and the two devices being called the same thing, POS machine, is the single most common confusion in this market.

Getting one

Where an EDC machine comes from

From a bank or a payment company, never from an electronics shop. The bank that holds your current account will offer one. Razorpay, Pine Labs, Payswiff and PhonePe supply them to small businesses directly, after KYC. Or you take one with your billing machine: NukkadShops is partnered with Razorpay, Pine Labs and Payswiff and can arrange the terminal for any customer, so it arrives connected to the POS. Rental and per-transaction charges come from the payment provider and depend on your volume; the shape of those costs, and what "free swipe machine" offers usually mean, is in card swipe machine for a small business.

What an integrated EDC terminal changes

When the terminal is connected to the billing machine, the biller taps settle and the exact bill amount appears on the card machine. Nothing is typed twice, so the classic mismatch of 1,240 billed and 1,204 charged cannot happen, and every card payment records against the bill it settled. At day-end the card totals already match the billing, because they were never entered separately. On DINO the same integration handles split bills across guests at a table. The product page is EDC payment integration; the wider comparison of the two machines is POS machine vs card machine.

Questions, answered.

What is an EDC machine?

EDC stands for electronic data capture. An EDC machine is the card machine at a counter: the terminal a customer taps, dips or swipes a card into, which also accepts UPI. It records the payment and prints a charge slip. It does not bill, track stock or print a GST invoice.

What is the card machine called?

Card machine, swipe machine, swiping machine, PoS terminal, card reader, payment terminal and EDC machine are all names for the same device. Shopkeepers say card machine or swipe machine. Banks and payment companies say PoS terminal or EDC.

What is an EDC bill?

The charge slip the terminal prints after a card payment: the amount, the masked card number, the approval code and the merchant name. It proves the payment happened. It is not a GST invoice and does not list what was bought; the billing machine prints that.

Is an EDC machine the same as a POS machine?

In India both get called a POS machine, which is where the confusion comes from. The EDC machine takes payments and nothing else. The billing POS is the touch-screen machine that prints bills, tracks stock and records customers, and it takes payments too through UPI on a QR and a connected EDC terminal.

Can I get an EDC machine through NukkadShops?

Yes. NukkadShops is partnered with Razorpay, Pine Labs and Payswiff and can arrange a terminal for any customer along with the billing machine. The two are connected, so the bill amount is pushed to the terminal and every card payment reconciles against its bill at day-end.

Take a card payment on a connected terminal and watch it reconcile.
